Rebuilding Haiti

I walked the streets of Port-au-Prince and all I saw was the utter destruction of an entire nation—a nation that has lost everything.  The latest estimates are that 150,000 people are dead, 1.5 million people are homeless, and 3 million have been affected by this earthquake.

But as I looked around me, amidst the devastation, I saw a people who are trying . . . a people who want to rise up and rebuild their nation.  In fact, on each city block, I saw people digging with their bare hands.  Some were using plastic plates to dig.  They are desperate to help.  They are desperate to find the bodies of their loved ones.  And they are desperate to rebuild.

One man told me that as thankful as he was for the food and water we were sending, there is just as great a need for tools and small equipment to help with the cleanup and restoration.

The United Nations is starting to help clear the debris.  But the devastation is so massive that it will be weeks, if not months, before they reach the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Can you imagine staring at the rubble of your home knowing your loved ones are buried beneath and not being able to do anything about it?

We can provide enough tools and equipment for 300 Haitians to begin rebuilding.  Right now, I can get 300 wheelbarrows full of tools and equipment, including  shovels, picks, saws, jacks, sledge hammers, pick hammers, boots, goggles, gloves, and other basic tools that will assist them in the massive cleanup.

Each of these complete sets can be provided for only $250, which includes delivering them to Haiti.  Think of the hope that will begin to spark in the hearts of the Haitian people when they receive this equipment.

On Monday, I will be returning to Haiti. I need to raise these funds before then to ensure the container of tools gets sent from the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince. I need you to give generously today. Even if you have already donated to Haitian relief, please consider helping with these urgently needed resources. I am asking God for 300 of our friends and donors to each give $250 to provide one set of tools.

Please help us help the Haitian people rebuild. Please give as if it were your loved ones buried beneath the rubble.

One thing I learned about the Haitian people while I was there: They are hopeful . . .  they have not given up.  And we cannot give up on them.  In the words of one Haitian, "From the ashes we will rise."  Let’s help them do just that!
