There are more than 1 billion people in our world that lack access to clean water. This causes 2 million unsafe drinking water deaths every year and 90 percent are children. Every day 6,000 children die from water-related illnesses. Diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, cholera, worms and parasites, and trachoma just to name a few. With each sip, the number of deaths grow.

The world water crisis is one of the largest public health issues of our time. Combine war, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and even traffic accidents…. dirty water still kills more people. Many women and young children in rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the world must trek as much as 12 miles every day to retrieve water for their families.

Each year in Africa, 40 billion hours are spent just on fetching water. The consequences are tragic. Children have no time for school, and women are unable to work as they spend hours walking to unclean water sources. Globally, children lose 443 million school days each year because of waterborne illnesses.

Let’s face it, it’s difficult for us to totally understand the global need for water. We walk to the faucet, turn the tap on, and the water flows.
