(FoxNews)--PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti
β€”The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help.

(CNN) β€”A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and inflicting a catastrophe on the impoverished Caribbean nation. Its ambassador to the United States said, "The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best.”

Haiti has been devastated. Hospitals have collapsed, homes are ruined, schools have caved in . . . even the National Palace has been destroyed. The Prime Minister of Haiti just announced that hundreds of thousands are feared dead. Many more are injured and devastated.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake was much bigger than the last major earthquake, a 6.7 magnitude in 1984. This is the biggest earthquake in Haiti in 200 years. Needless to say, the country is in chaos.

The fact that 8 out of 10 people in Haiti already live in poverty makes this an even greater catastrophe. Reports of men and women finding the bodies of family members in the rubble continue to come in.

Since the initial quake, at least 28 aftershocks have hit Haiti, some above a 5.0 magnitude. Most of Port-Au-Prince has been destroyed leaving many of its 2 million inhabitants homeless.

World Help currently sponsors several hundred children in Haiti and although our communication into this country is very limited, we are working as hard as we can to make sure the children are safe and have all they need.

World Help has a long history of helping the people of Haiti. In fact, in the perfect timing of God, two containers with $2.5 million worth of medical supplies, medicine, and shoes arrived at the wharf in Port-Au-Prince three days ago and are waiting to be unloaded. A third container with food staples is on the way and should arrive shortly. With only one working crane in port, the supplies will be unloaded as soon as possible. While three containers will go a long way in alleviating the current pain and suffering, many more will be needed to restore the people of Haiti.

With millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid and disaster relief supplies already on hand in Haiti, World Help is positioned to assist the thousands of people who find themselves facing the most desperate circumstances imaginable. Our staff is working now with our long-time partners on the ground in Haiti to help assess the need and make arrangements to get the aid and supplies delivered immediately.

I need your help to facilitate the distribution of these supplies as soon as possible. This is a chance for us to have a huge impact on a nation in crisis. Every dollar you give will distribute $100 of supplies. Every $100 equals $10,000. If you do the math, even a small gift is multiplied exponentially. If we move quickly we can literally impact thousands of people.

We also need to immediately send money to set up temporary hospitals, emergency food centers, and purchase survival kits for those who have been devastated. Money will also be used to purchase water and basic food needs until order can be restored.

Please help today! Your gift of $50, $100, $500 or more, could make a huge difference.
